AJ Laser 230z 73" Build Thread

Casualplay I don't have a huge problem with overheating here in Alaska... :D I like what you did there by opening it up by the exhaust tubes. I'm thinking about doing something like that as well. Did you block the tunnel or are you dumping the outlet air though it as well?

Still working on the Cowling. Had to decide where to put the DA Ignition Box so I could orientate the lead and plug cap accordingly. I came up with this, just like how it lays out, with the connections pointing up, and the ignition box LED will be visible through the cowling inlet. Then I got...

    Registration of UAS

It is interesting that the Reform Act of 2012 is still in effect when this recent, Section 48 just "superseded" part of the 2012 reform act unofficially? I think DOT and the FAA needed a bit more collaboration prior to freaking out the general public (that are hobbyists of course) by posting...

+1  I agree with that statement. I don't want to pull politics into this forum, but continuing to have fun flying model aircraft, pay my 3yr/$5 dues, I don't plan on being reckless with the hobby so I shouldn't have to worry about in much. I have some friends with the FAA who fly model...

    BRICO 43A Pin Flag Switch

I'm not sure what to think yet. It's nice to eliminate a mechanical connection such as a throw switch, but at the same rate... the HD switches now days doesn't seem to be a weak link at all. The Booma switch is pretty nice having the redundant battery with iso protection... but when I look at...

Well that's what it looks like protruding from the cowling. doesn't stick out much at all. That's all I have got for tonight. Hopefully be back at it soon!

will do, I'll try and take some pics of the slick... so much harder with a single cylinder gasser. Other than scale looks, I haven't seen a whole lot of airframes that support the inverted single cyl when it comes to cooling properly.

I am super surprised how well the DA35 nestles into this cowling. It honestly barely sticks out! Going to really have to create a better air channel for this bird, or just trust the 3:1 ratio is sucking the air through it ha!

Yeah, I''ll open it up a bit more and add 1/8" foam sheeting to keep the air around the fins. I dont like getting too carried away with that until everything is routed and hooked up so I don't shoot myself in the foot! I did this foam method on my slick and it's working out great... time...

Just like with most cowling jobs, you can use a piece of paper as a template. I taped the paper down, and cut out with an xacto knife the exhaust holes, folded it back, removed the exhaust, but the cowling on, marked the holes, removed the cowling and installed the exhaust... knowing that the...

So there it sits! Now for the cowling! I love using a pencil and a dremel tool for this part. You can usually feel what part hits first as the cowling starts to come on, in this case it was the spark plug. Mark it with a pencil and start making small cuts/holes and enlarging them as you go...

Engine Installation: I ended up using the Desert Aircraft DA-35 Engine with a J-Tec DA35 Pitts Muffler (regular). As always, fuel proof the firewall as best you can. I just used 30min ZAP epoxy and smeared/rubbed it into the wood grain on the firewall. Some folks prefer to thin it out using...

    New Build Help

I have been thinking about the same top two aircraft your looking at. Seems like the EF Extra 300EXP is the choice airframe. Although as Bipenut just said, I'm probably going to go for the 60" Extra 300. Also the MXS seems to be a faster airframe... not to throw another plane in the mix, but I...

What's up with all the spam this weekend? I got some flights in on Saturday. Too cold for my internal combustion engines... about 26 degrees or so with fairly high humidity. But flew some foamies around, did some warbird dogfighting/chasing/formation flying with a couple Eflight P51's. Fun...

Kind of forced to go electric with that plane though.

Bummer. I wonder since the DX6 is identical to the DX7 other than a rotary knob and a three pos switch (and +$100), there may be an input for a rotary knob already integrated on the circuit board... hmmmm
